BUSH WAS SLOW TO SHOW COMPASSION

WE PRIDE ourselves on being a premiere humane society. Yet it took a world of prodding to get our leader to shelve his fishing rod, golf club and baseball glove and show a bit of compassion for those who are suffering extreme deprivation and countless deaths.

At that, we came in a dismal third behind France and Britain.

It's been said rightly that a politician will promise the moon, but the day he takes office comes an extended total eclipse. Such was the fate of the Kurds. Would that Mr. Bush had consulted with a few Mideast scholars before embarking on what now appears to be somewhat of a gung-ho misadventure.

Most of the oil we fought for is going up in smoke and untold pollution to the tune of some $100 million per day. If the current dilemma is Bush's idea of stability and a New World Order, then show me somebody (save radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh) who concurs.

What bothered Bush more than anything was the constant drumming by the war protesters outside the White House. He said it disturbed his sleep. Now, wasn't that a damn shame? I'm truly glad we won a short war, but aren't the celebrations a bit overplayed?
