EXPLOSION KILLS WORKER IN W.VA. PLANT

An explosion Tuesday in the power unit at a Union Carbide Corp. chemical plant killed one worker, authorities said. No other injuries were reported after the explosion about 3 p.m. caused a fire in the steam-power unit.

The fire was quickly brought under control, said John Smoot of the Kanawha County ambulance service, and plant spokesman Thad Epps said there was no leak at the plant. The cause of the explosion was not known, Epps said. The identity of the worker was not immediately released.

Among the chemicals Union Carbide makes at the plant are a urethane catalyst used in car seats and furniture, an acetate used in automotive molding, amines used in gas treatment solvents and paint primers, and glycol ethers for paint solvents and industrial cleaners. The plant, which is Union Carbide's largest in West Virginia, has about 820 workers. - Associated Press
