COUPLE CELEBRATES WITH LOTTO MONEY
A Fairfax couple is ringing in the New Year with a $10.5 million Lotto jackpot.John and Evelyn Kane showed up with the winning ticket at Lottery headquarters in Richmond on Tuesday, the final day of 1991. They walked away with their first payment, a check worth $400,054 after taxes.
John Kane purchased the winning ticket to the Dec. 14 drawing at a Woolworth store in Tysons Corner. He said he let the computer choose the winning combination of 2-8-20-33-39-42.
"I heard the numbers early Sunday morning on the radio," Kane told lottery officials. "I jotted them down on a tissue box, but didn't have a chance to check them until later in the day when we got home from church."
He said he called the Woolworth store to confirm them and was told they had sold the winning ticket.
"I told them, `You're talking to the man who won!' "
The Kanes said they will share the winnings with six family members. The family will receive 19 annual payments of $402,800 after taxes.
The estimated Lotto jackpot for New Year's Day is $7.5 million, lottery officials said. - Associated Press
