Life has been hard but rewarding for Eric and Brenda Deare and their 16-month-old son, Mark, this year. The Deares were married more than a year ago when Eric was still at Shawsville High School. Despite a new baby, a difficult work schedule and membership on the high school football team, Eric stayed in school and graduated last June.
He and the family spent graduation week at Myrtle Beach. A month later, he reported for Army basic training at Fort Lewis, Wash. Next was advanced individual training at Fort Jackson, S.C.
Brenda stayed at home with the baby, living in their Elliston trailer and working at Arby's and a real estate firm. She and Eric were separated for four months.
"It was a lonely four months," she said.
Eric wasn't having a great time, either. But he expects better when he reports for duty in January at Fort Hood, Texas. He will work in personnel records, keeping track of promotions and insurance.
He expects to be promoted to E-3 (private first class) in three months, and he just bought a 1990 four-wheel-drive Toyota pickup.
The family will move to Fort Hood. Brenda hopes to work and take college classes.
