GREEN-LIGHT RESOLUTIONS CAN BE FUN
Do your New Year's resolutions look like a big red STOP sign?STOP smoking!
STOP swearing!
STOP eating chocolate!
STOP making New Year's resolutions!
Hmmmm . . . maybe you oughta try a START sign this year.
If you're eager to start something new in 1992, you're in the right place at the right time. Schools and organizations around the valley are offering a variety of classes and workshops this month.
Dancing is great exercise and great fun. Classes in country and western dancing, clogging, aerobics and social dancing now are forming in Radford, Christiansburg, Pulaski and other localities.
And if handling a ball has more appeal than ballroom dancing, you're still in luck. Local recreation departments are accepting registration for basketball, volleyball and other team sports for adults, children and youths.
Arts and crafts classes, specialized hobbies and workshops on subjects such as photography and woodworking are available for the New Year. At New River Community College, for instance, you can take courses including Russian history and conversational German.
For a detailed listing of offerings available around the valley, look for the Current Events section in Sunday's New River Current.
\ THE FIRST MOTION PICTURE THEATERS: For a 5-cent admission you could watch a variety of films accompanied by live piano music at the Nickelodeon.
That was in 1903.
My, how times have changed. But each month, Radford University brings back the good ol' days with its Nickelodeon Films Series. The series features classic movies with legendary stars.
Saturday's Nickelodeon Films are "Black Lash," featuring Lash LaRue; "Riding Wild," with Tim McCoy; "Huckleberry Finn," starring Mickey Rooney; and "Alter Ego," with Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Showings will begin at 7 p.m. in the basement viewing room of McConnell Library.
Admission - believe it or not - is free.
\ THE NEW RIVER COMMUNITY CHORUS WANTS YOU! Even if you're not a Luciano Pavarotti.
The chorus is looking for more voices and invites all singers in the valley to join. The chorus practices Thursday evenings at Radford University. Auditions are not required.
Rehearsals for the spring concert begin next week. Singers will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the rehearsal room of Powell Hall.
The concert will feature Vivaldi's "Gloria," as well as other songs and anthems. Lynn Loftus will conduct, with accompaniment by Brenda Williams. Performances will be April 6 in Pulaski and April 7 in Radford.
Those interested in joining may call Jeanne Worrell, 382-5492, or Ervin White, 674-9541, for information, or just show up at the first rehearsal Thursday.
\ WHO'S COOKING? Randy Travis, Bob Hope and Arnold Palmer are some of the celebrities you'll find in the kitchen.
Members of Playmakers & Company now have celebrity cookbooks on sale for $5 per copy. The books contain recipes from members and patrons of the community theater group, as well as from the rich and famous.
Cookbooks may be ordered from members of Playmakers & Company or picked up at Entertainment Tonight at 203 Depot St. in Christiansburg. To leave a message, call the community theater information line at 382-0154.
