BOARD PICKS OFFICERS
Girardus "Gus" Forry was elected chairman of the Franklin County Board of Supervisors in a reorganizational meeting Thursday.Forry is a manager at Standard Register, a Rocky Mount printing company, and represents the Rocky Mount district on the board. He is beginning his third four-year term.
Elected vice chairman was W. Wayne Angell, who owns a used-car garage and farm supplies business in Callaway. He represents the Blackwater district on the board and is beginning his second term.
The supervisors Thursday also scheduled a public hearing for Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. on their proposed changes to the county erosion-control ordinance.
The changes will bring the county regulations into compliance with new state regulations that were adopted in 1990.
One of the changes would require new homeowners and business owners who are building a new home or office to obtain an erosion permit before starting construction.
The permit cost would be $50 for homeowners and $100 for commercial buildings, plus $25 per acre up to $1,000.
The proposed ordinance also would include an amendment that would require some landowners around Smith Mountain Lake to lay stone riprap along their shorelines to curb erosion.
