CONOCO GETS VARIANCE FOR TANK
ON DEC. 17, I attended a variance request to build yet another fuel tank close to Montvale School. Despite the fact Conoco could build the tank 2,300 feet from the school, the appeal was allowed, so the tank will go 1,400 feet from the school. A petition with 105 signatures against the tank was presented, to little avail. The variance was recommended by the Land Use Guidelines staff. Most members of the Bedford County Board of Appeals expressed their concern. I believe everyone was conscientious about their responsibility, but only Mr. Noel of Stewartsville voted against it. Still, a dangerous situation was made worse.
The only fair solution I see to eliminate this potential disaster is to build a new school in a safe place and relocate the Land Use Guidelines staff and the Board of Zoning Appeals meetings to Montvale School. JOE McKELVEY BLUE RIDGE
