NATIONAL LINEN TO HIRE IN ROANOKE
National Linen Service, a commercial laundry, said Monday it plans to hire 30 to 35 employees in Roanoke by next month. The company by Feb. 1 will close its processing branch in Winston-Salem, N.C., and acquire Servitex Inc. in Roanoke. The company will have a Roanoke work force of 160 to 165 when these moves are complete, said Roy Latham, a regional vice president at the firm's Atlanta headquarters. Some of the new jobs will be in engineering and supervision; the others will not require skills, he said.
From 18 to 25 jobs will be transferred to National Linen from the former Servitex operation, he said. Servitex, once on Salem Turnpike in Salem, acquired the old Crystal Spring Laundry in Roanoke years ago.
The new employees and the workers transferred from Servitex will create a second shift for National Linen in Roanoke.
National Linen launders linens, uniforms and entrance mats for hospitals, restaurants, nursing homes and other businesses, Latham said. Servitex, still operating in other cities, is a competitor.
About 115 people work at National Linen on Shenandoah Avenue, Northwest. Part of the Winston-Salem business will be transferred to Roanoke and the remainder to other branches of the company in the Carolinas.
