JERRY WHITE SUPERVISORS' NEW CHAIRMAN

PULASKI COUNTY After 12 years, the Pulaski County Board of Supervisors has chosen a new chairman.

Jerry White, a Republican starting his second term as Robinson District supervisor, was elected unanimously at the board's meeting Monday night.

White, a county native who worked for 27 years at Jefferson Mills in Pulaski, moved last month to BBA Friction as special projects manager. He has been an articulate speaker on behalf of the board in recent years, and an avowed foe of state-mandated programs when the state does not fund them.

Massie District Supervisor Mason Vaughan Sr., a Democrat who has held the chairmanship for his entire 12 years on the board, joined in voting for White.

Joe Sheffey, a Democrat representing the Cloyd District and also starting his second term, was the unanimous choice for vice chairman. There were no other nominations for either post.

The shift follows a change in the majority political party on the board. The defeat of incumbent Democrat V.E. "Jack" Vaughn Nov. 5 by Republican Ira. S. "Pete" Crawford gave the GOP its first 3-2 majority in years.

Republican Bruce Fariss, who nominated White as chairman, said later in the meeting that Vaughan had kept board actions relatively free of politics and he hoped that bipartisanship would continue with this board.

"It's been a good 12 years . . . I have no regrets," Vaughan, the outgoing chairman, said later to a reporter. "He'll do a good job. It's time for someone else to do it."

If the Democrats had been the minority party on the board for 12 years and then became the majority, Vaughan said, he was sure they would have done the same thing.
