MAGNA VISTA BLITZES BASSETT IN 2ND HALF
Tony Holmes scored 29 points and Magna Vista pulled away in the second half for a 70-50 Piedmont District boys' basketball victory over Bassett on Tuesday night.Bassett (3-4 overall, 3-3 Piedmont) led 21-15 after one quarter, but the Warriors (6-1, 5-1) rallied to take a 33-32 lead at halftime.
Magna Vista used a full-court press and running game to rattle the Bengals in the second half. The Warriors outscored Bassett 17-6 in the third quarter, with Holmes scoring 11.
Brian Taylor added 20 points and Marcus Toney 11 for Magna Vista.
Dytanyon Norman made three 3-pointers and led Bassett with 17 points. \

CHATHAM - A scoring spurt to open the second half helped the Bulldogs put away a Piedmont District victory.
Martinsville (6-1, 5-1) led by eight at halftime and opened the third quarter with six straight points. Michael Frazier had six of his 10 points in the quarter and Lamont Martin also had six points as Martinsville stretched its lead to 17 by the end of the third.
Martin led the the Bulldogs with 19 points and Maurice Spencer had 14. LaVelton Pope led Chatham (1-7, 1-5) with 22 points and Dave Motley had 14.

MARTINSVILLE - Odell Hodge scored 32 points and grabbed 19 rebounds as the Lancers dominated the Hawks en route to a Piedmont District victory.
Laurel Park (7-2, 6-0) spotted Gretna a 2-0 lead before scoring 12 straight points. The Lancers led 23-7 after one quarter.
Eric Waller led Gretna (4-5, 2-4) with 13 points and Rodney Irvin had 11. For Laurel Park, Lonzy Robertson had 17 points and six rebounds. \

GALAX - The Maroon Tide's fast break and pressure defense buried the Eagles early in a Mountain Empire District rout.
Galax (3-4, 3-2) used its running game to jump out on top 24-7 after the first quarter.
Jeff Spells powered the Maroon Tide with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Dee Early also had 18 points and Jason Ross added 13.
Juan Garcia paced Rocky Gap (3-3, 3-2) with 13 points, and Brian Lawson and Mike Bird had 11 each.

BLAND - The Buffaloes opened the game with a 22-5 run and went on to squash the Rockets in a Mountain Empire District game.
Twelve players scored for Floyd (6-1, 4-1), which was led by Mike Hylton's 18 points. Fred Via added 11, Travis Crawford 10 and John Hawley 10.
No player reached double figures for winless Bland (0-4, 0-4), which trailed 63-25 after three quarters.

BUENA VISTA - The Cougars' balanced scoring attack was too much for the Fighting Blues in a Pioneer District matchup.
Raymond Sampson, Neal Dressler and Everett Hughes each scored 12 points, and Tony Jeter had 11 for Covington (4-3, 4-1). Mike Kerr was the only double-figure scorer for Parry McCluer (2-3, 1-2) with 10. \

LEXINGTON - Todd Jenkins and Matt Sherrard combined for seven 3-pointers and 36 points to propel the Chargers past the Scarlet Hurricane in a Pioneer District game.
Bath County (6-2, 5-1) led virtually all the way, then was forced to hold off a furious Lexington rally down the stretch.
Jenkins had 21 points, including four 3-pointers to lead the winners. Sherrard, who had three 3-pointers, finished with 15. Craig Phillips chipped in 14.
Center Gavin Clark, who had 40 points last week, led Lexington (5-3, 3-3) with 34. \

NEW CASTLE - Marty Early made a jump shot from the top of the key with two seconds remaining to give Natural Bridge the road victory.
Craig (1-6, 1-5) had gone ahead 48-47 with nine seconds remaining on a basket in the lane by David McPherson. McPherson led all scorers with 25 points.
Early finished with a team-high 18 points for Natural Bridge (3-4, 3-2). Natural Bridge trailed 34-31 entering the final quarter.

MONTEREY - The visiting Rebels rallied to rout winless Highland in a Pioneer District matchup.
Rockbridge (2-7, 1-6) trailed 16-13 after one quarter but outscored the Rams (0-8, 0-7) 69-48 the rest of the way.
Kevin Alestock scored 19 points, David Layton 16 and Andy Cline and William Sensabaugh 10 each for Rockbridge.
Shawn Harvey had a game-high 24 points for Highland. Chris Schill added 16 and Micah Ginn 14. \
Marion 67

MARION - The Scarlet Hurricane outscored the Bobcats 19-4 in the third quarter, then withstood a 3-point Radford barrage in the fourth quarter to raise its record to 7-1.
Radford scored 27 points in the fourth quarter, including seven 3-pointers, in falling to 1-6. It was the Bobcats' fourth game at Marion, where they played in a Christmas tournament.
Eddie Boothe scored a game-high 22 points and Eric Hungate added 17 for the Scarlet Hurricane. Wayne Lineburg was the high scorer for Radford with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. \
