LAWMAKERS SAY TOLL, NEW ROADS NOT NEEDED
Military spending cuts may help ease traffic in the congested Hampton Roads area, negating the need for new highways, state lawmakers decided.Federal defense cuts are expected to remove 6,400 military personnel and their families from the congested Hampton Roads area, a committee studying transportation problems said.
The new Interstate 664 bridge-tunnel could also ease traffic over the next decade, lawmakers said.
Tuesday's vote effectively quashed plans to impose tolls for the Hampton-Roads Bridge Tunnel. Those tolls would have paid for an additional tube at the crossing.
