MARINE LANCE CPL. GEORGE E. AKERS, son of George and Mary Akers of Hiwassee, received a certificate of commendation for superior performance of duty while assigned with Marine Aviation Logistices Squadron-2 in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. He is a 1989 Pulaski County High School graduate who joined the corps the same year.\ MARINE PFC. DOUGLAS P. BARNES, son of Michael and Carol Barnes of Blacksburg, graduated from the Marine Corps basic combat engineer course at Camp Lejeune, N.C. He is a 1989 Blacksburg High School graduate.
Those recently completing basic training include: ARMY PVT. MICHAEL TODD HINKLEY, son of Thomas and Barbara Hinkley of Christiansburg; NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT JEFFREY G. RIGNEY, son of Charles and Vanessa Burgis of Pulaski; and NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT SIDNA A. HOPKINS, son of Hettie Webb of Radford.
Those recently departing for six-month deployment include: NAVY SEAMAN APPRENTICE ANDREW L. HOLLANDSWORTH, son of Larry and Sandra Hollandsworth, on the USS America; and NAVY FIREMAN APPRENTICE JASON D. SAGE, son of Teresa Whitt of Dublin, on the USS Newport.
Recently returning from Persian Gulf deployment is NAVY SEAMAN ROBIN J. QUESENBERRY, a 1987 Floyd County High graduate.
