DMV WANTS NEW FEES FOR CAR REGISTRATION
- To encourage people to register cars and trucks by mail, the state Department of Motor Vehicles is recommending what amounts to a $2 penalty for registering any other way.DMV Commissioner Donald Williams gave the House Committee on Roads and Internal Navigation a proposal to raise vehicle registration fees from $26 to $28, but to offer a $2 discount to anyone who registers by mail.
Processing vehicle registrations by mail saves time and money, Williams said.
But DMV will continue to process all driver's license renewals in person.
Several committee members wondered why the DMV needs a rate increase when the department can transfer $16 million into the state's general fund in the governor's proposed budget.
Williams said extra revenue from drivers who registered in person could help offset the upcoming cost of replacing about a million tags, he estimated, that are old and too battered to remain in use.
The new tags will cost the state $6 a set, Williams said.
