AIRMAN NICOLE L. ROSE, daughter of Ruth R. Gaither of 4145 Vermont Rose Ave., has graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.Rose is a 1991 graduate of William Fleming High School.
\ STAFF SGT. PENNY R. MASON, daughter of Dorothy G. Heins of 4809 Florist Road and Bobby D. Bowling of Thaxton, has been promoted to her present rank while serving as an inventory management specialist at Hahn Air Base, Lautzenhasen, Germany.
Mason is a 1984 graduate of Staunton River High School.
\ PVT. DAVID M. JOHNSON, son of Kathleen J. Zwart of 4635 Berkshire Circle, recently completed training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.
Johnson graduated from Lord Botetourt High School in 1991.
\ NAVY FIREMAN RECRUIT MARC D. KELLY, son of Robert C. and Patricia L. Kelly of 307 Deaner Drive, recently reported for duty aboard the USS Shenandoah, a destroyer tender based in Norfolk.
Kelly is a 1989 graduate of Cave Spring High School.
\ NAVY PETTY OFFICER 1ST CLASS DONALD W. PARKER, son of Ada C. Parker of 609 Milton St. N.W., recently reported for duty aboard the destroyer USS Comte De Grasse, based in Norfolk.
Parker graduated from William Fleming High School in 1980.
\ CERTIFICATES OF APPRECIATION were presented on behalf of Edward J. Derwinski, secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, to employees of the Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center who were called to active duty in the Persian Gulf crisis.
Honored were Clifton Willis, Patricia Morris, Robert Rowell, Dr. Gary Harpold, Joyce Johnson, Jean Shelor, Erid Stroud, Gordon King, Michael Morris, Dr. Sarbit Aujla, Dr. Eduardo Rueda-Vasquez, Ron Long, Joseph Leonard, Dr. Jean Vike, and Tillman Morris.
\ NAVY FIREMAN MICHAEL P. HUDGINS, son of Jerry Hudgins of 1549 Britaney Road, recently returned from a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf.
He serves aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, based in Alameda, Calif.
Hudgins participated in Operation Fiery Vigil, which evacuated more than 17,000 Americans from the Philippines after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo.
The battle group also spent more than three months on station in the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Desert Storm.
\ SECOND LT. RON D. MARTINEZ, son of Wyn H. Sellers of 2013 Tinker Drive N.E., has received silver wings upon graduation from pilot training at Columbus Air Force Base, Miss.
Martinez is a 1985 graduate of Blacksburg High School and a 1990 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo.
\ NAVY PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS DAVID I. HUNTER, a 1979 graduate of Patrick Henry High School, has departed for a six-month deployment aboard the USS America.
The USS America, an aircraft carrier based in Norfolk, will lead an eight-ship battle group while conducting routine operations in the Mediterranean Sea.
