Botetourt choral group seeks new members

The Botetourt County Chorus has begun rehearsals for its spring variety show and is looking for new members.

"USA in Song," is the theme of the show, which will be presented in March.

Rehearsals are held each Monday evening from 7:30-9 in the fellowship hall of Fincastle Baptist Church, Main and Church streets. Jan. 27 is the last date to join before the spring show. For more information, call Carol Hingular at 992-6111.

Valley veterans council elects officers for 1992

Dan Karnes has been elected president of the Roanoke Valley Veterans Council for 1992.

Other officers are Corky Coughlin, vice president; Dallas Proax Jr., secretary; Harold Worrell, treasurer; Tom Berger, chaplain; and Waynard Caldwell, sergeant-at-arms.

Roanoke County starts Winter Guard program

Roanoke County Parks and Recreation is offering a new program this year called "Roanoke Valley Winter Guard."

Winter Guard is a performance-oriented program for Roanoke Valley teens interested in dance, drama and twirling flags, rifles, batons and sabers. A 4- to 8-minute group floor routine is presented in exhibition and in regional and world competitions through Winter Guard International.

An informational meeting will be held tonight from 7-8:30 at the Ogden Senior Center, 2932 Ogden Road S.W. Program Coordinator Michelle Edwards will discuss program requirements, answer questions and show a video of nationally rated Winter Guards.

AARP forming group to aid widowed people

The American Association of Retired Persons is forming a Widowed Person's Service group in Roanoke.

The group trains outreach volunteers to work one-on-one with newly widowed people. Volunteers should be in reasonably good health, have been widowed for at least 18 months and must be objective about other people's problems while being sympathetic to their feelings and needs.

Margaret Morton, president of the Virginia affiliate of AARP, will conduct the organizational meeting Jan. 21 at 10:30 a.m. in the fellowship hall of Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1831 Deyerle Road S.W.
