Roanoke man returns from Peace Corps stint

Steven Springer of Roanoke recently returned from a two-year assignment in Guatemala with the Peace Corps.

Springer worked in youth program development as an extension agent with the Ministry of Agriculture. He helped form after-school 4-H groups in rural, indigenous communities, involving youths in gardening, athletic and fund-raising activities.

Springer, who has a degree in animal science and biology from Virginia Tech, plans to use his experiences in Guatemala as the basis of a teaching career, working with at-risk youths in Los Angeles.

He has been accepted in a Los Angeles program that grants him teaching credentials on an emergency basis so that he can begin teaching Spanish-speaking students without first having to complete the normal certification process. He starts in February.

Springer, a 1983 graduate of Cave Spring High School, is the son of Donna J. Springer of Southwest Roanoke County and the late James W. Springer.
