LANCERS RUN PAST BULLDOGS

Laurel Park used an 11-0 run in the second quarter to overtake Martinsville, and the Lancers went on to an 80-63 victory over the Bulldogs on Friday night in a Piedmont District boys' basketball game.

Laurel Park (10-2 overall, 9-0 in the district) at one time trailed 13-2. The Lancers closed to 13-7 at the first break before pulling away.

Ronnie Jackson, who finished with 17 points, hit two 3-pointers and was 6-of-6 on free throws in the Lancers' second-quarter run.

Odell Hodge led Laurel Park with 24 points, 19 rebounds and seven blocked shots.

The Bulldogs (7-2, 6-2) got 20 points from Maurice Spencer and 13 from Michael Frazier. \

Marion 61

Virginia 54

MARION - Eddie Boothe and Eric Hungate powered a second-half rally that pushed Marion past the Bearcats and landed the Scarlet Hurricane in sole possession of first place in the Highlands District.

Virginia (9-2, 3-1) led 35-26 at halftime, but Boothe, a 6-foot-6 center, scored 19 of his game-high 28 points after halftime. He also finished with 10 rebounds.

Hungate hit nine of 10 free throws and scored nine of his 11 points in the final quarter, when Marion (10-1, 4-1) outscored the Bearcats 20-10. Hungate added seven rebounds and six assists.

Virginia knocked off Marion in a Christmas tournament for the Hurricane's loss, but the game did not count in the district standings. The two teams, which entered Friday's game tied for first place and undefeated in the district, will meet again on Feb. 14 in Bristol.

Adrian Sensabaugh scored 13 points, Jason Stevens 12, Mike Danser 11 and Robbie Howard 10 for Virginia.

Marion has not given up more than 57 points in a game this season. \

Fort Chiswell 65

Rocky Gap 54

ROCKY GAP - The Pioneers cruised past the Eagles for a Mountain Empire District win and reached the midway mark of the season without a loss.

Fort Chiswell (10-0, 8-0) outscored Rocky Gap 23-4 in the second quarter and led 37-14 at halftime. The Eagles (4-5, 3-5) made six of 33 shots in the first half.

Doug Mabry led Fort Chiswell with four 3-pointers and 19 points, Brian Lampkins added 16 points and Shane Woods had 12.

Brian Lawson scored a game-high 20 points for Rocky Gap, which pulled close by outscoring Fort Chiswell 26-10 in the final quarter. \

Grayson County 73

Narrows 46

INDEPENDENCE - Grayson County hit 10 of its first 14 shots and buried the Green Wave early in a Mountain Empire District game.

The Blue Devils (7-3, 5-2) took a 25-11 lead after the first quarter and blew open the game with a 28-12 run in the third quarter.

Wilbert Campbell sparked Grayson County with 17 points, eight assists and four steals. Bonner Satterwhite added 16 points.

No player scored more than eight points for Narrows (4-4, 4-4). \

James River 62

Rockbridge 52

BUCHANAN - The Knights (7-5, 7-3), leading by two points after three quarters, pulled away in the final period for the Pioneer District victory over the Rebels.

Solan Wooden, in his second game after returning from injury, tied Ryan Shotwell for James River scoring honors with 11 points.

Mike Chambers of Rockbridge (3-9, 2-8) led all scorers with 15. \

Highland 60

Parry McCluer 58

MONTEREY - Micah Ginn and Chris Schill each scored 16 points as the hot-shooting Rams pulled the Pioneer District upset over the Fighting Blues (4-5, 3-4).

Highland (2-9, 2-8) took a four-point first-quarter lead and never trailed. Parry McCluer hit four 3-pointers in a 23-point fourth quarter but couldn't overcome the early deficit.

Ginn hit five of eight shots from the field and was 3-of-4 at the free-throw line. Schill, who sank three 3-pointers, missed only twice in 10 field-goal attempts.

Chuck Baker paced Parry McCluer with 17 points. \

Natural Bridge 85

Lexington 72

LEXINGTON - Marty Early tossed in 27 points and Joey Carter added 19 as the Rockets ran away from the Scarlet Hurricane in the Pioneer District.

Natural Bridge (5-5, 5-3) broke to an early lead and never trailed.

Gavin Clark had 24 points and Jesse Baker 18 for Lexington (5-6, 3-6).

Gretna 70

COLLINSVILLE - Thad Wade sank a short jumper with one second left in regulation to force overtime, then made two free throws with three seconds left in overtime to ice the Cavaliers' Piedmont District win over the Hawks.

Gretna (4-7, 2-6) led 64-62 and had Eric Waller at the free-throw line with nine seconds left in regulation. Waller missed his first free throw in a bonus situation, setting up Wade's tying shot.

Wade paced Fieldale-Collinsville (7-4, 5-4) with a game-high 23 points, and Scott Chitwood added 18 points and Mario Walker 16.

Waller had 21 points and Roddy Locust 18 for Gretna. \

Magna Vista 72

Patrick County 66

RIDGEWAY - Brian Taylor's 22 points paced the Warriors to the Piedmont District win over the pesky Cougars.

Magna Vista (9-1, 7-1) never could put away winless Patrick County (0-10, 0-8). The Cougars climbed to three points down with 90 seconds to play before the Warriors secured their victory at the free-throw line.

Marcus Toney contributed 15 points and Tony Holmes 13 for Magna Vista.

Mike Wood, who hit three of his five 3-point attempts in the fourth quarter, paced Patrick County with 21 points. \

Bassett 86

Dan River 77

BASSETT - Dytanon Norman scored 30 points, nine in the fourth quarter, as the Bengals (5-4, 3-3) won the Piedmont District game over the Wildcats.

Bassett needed a 27-point fourth quarter to subdue upset-minded Dan River, which led 39-38 at halftime and trailed 59-57 after three quarters.

Norman and Stacy Valentine combined for 17 points in the final quarter for Bassett, which was 32-of-60 from the field and 8-of-14 on 3-point attempts.

Sonny Motley had 27 points and Brian Gunn added 26 for Dan River (3-8, 1-7). \

Tunstall 81

Chatham 62

CHATHAM - The Trojans, down by three points in the third quarter, outscored the Cavaliers 26-10 in the final quarter to turn a close game into a Piedmont District rout.

Khris Law led Tunstall (4-6, 4-4) with 24 points. Tarrace Carter scored 20 and Chris Walton had 19, nine in the fourth quarter.

LaVelton Pope had 14 points to lead Chatham (1-9, 1-7).

The Cavaliers, who trailed 38-30 at halftime, led 45-42 in the third quarter before Tunstall took a timeout, then regained the lead 55-52 after three periods. \

George Wythe 72

Castlewood 59

CASTLEWOOD - After an 0-4 start, the Maroons won their seventh straight game by shooting down the Blue Devils in a Hogoheegee District game.

Sie Dickinson scored 19 points, Chris Waddell 16 and Malcolm Lewis 15 for George Wythe (7-4, 5-1).

Tracy Hall and O.J. Williams combined for 50 of Castlewood's 59. The Blue Devils are 4-6 and 2-3. \

Rural Retreat 46

RURAL RETREAT - The Warriors (3-4, 2-2) had four players in double figures, led by Jason Fore with 17 points, in beating the Indians in the Hogoheegee District game.

John Gregory scored 11 points and Michael Houseman added 10 for Rural Retreat (1-9, 0-6).

Chilhowie held Rural Retreat to five points in the first quarter and led 30-19 at halftime after a 3-pointer at the buzzer. \
