GUN CONTROL ADVOCATE TO RUN FOR CONGRESS

A veteran state legislator who has championed gun control announced Friday she will seek the Democratic nomination for Congress in Virginia's new black-majority district.

Del. Jean Cunningham of Richmond joined state Sen. Robert Scott of Newport News in the 3rd District race. The black-majority district was created by the General Assembly last year to meet federal Voting Rights Act requirements.

In the House, Cunningham pushed unsuccessfully last year for a three-day waiting period on gun purchases. Although her bill was rejected, then-Speaker A.L. Philpott - a gun control opponent - praised her speech on the House floor as the best he had ever heard.
