TOBEY, JAMES F. SR.

James F. Tobey Sr., 67, formerly of Salem, passed away Thursday morning at Lewis Gale Hospital. Mr. Tobey was born in Norfolk, Va., graduated from Andrew Lewis High School, attended Wake Forest University and was a WWII veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp. He served as chief deputy clerk in the Roanoke County Circuit Court Clerk's Office and became Salems first Circuit Court Clerk in 1968. He remained in that position until his retirement in December, 1990. Mr. Tobey was a member of Salem Baptist Church where he also served as a deacon. Other local involvements included membership in the Salem Lions and Kiwanis Clubs. Survivors include; Louise Moore Tobey, Salem, wife; Marion G. Tobey, of Richmond, mother; two brothers and two sisters; Manley W. Tobey, of Richmond and Dr. Thomas Tobey of Birmingham, Ala.; Margaret T. Williams of Suffolk and Virginia T. Smith of Richmond; and three sons, James F. Tobey Jr. and wife Rebecca Tobey of Roanoke, Gerald W. Tobey of Salem, and Christopher L. Tobey and wife Kim McMahan Tobey of Raleigh N.C.; other survivors include, five grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren. Services are to be held at Salem Baptist Church, Saturday, January 25, 1992, at 12:00 noon. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in favor of the Salem Rescue Squad or the American Heart Association. Friends may call at Lotz Salem Chapel.
