ROBB AIDES DISCUSSED TAPE, EX-STAFFER SAYS
A number of aides to U.S. Sen. Charles Robb took part in discussions about leaking the contents of a taped telephone call of Gov. Douglas Wilder, even though an internal Robb memo said disclosure would be illegal, according to evidence presented Thursday in federal court. The information came in a statement of facts read by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Wiechering as former Robb press secretary Steve Johnson pleaded guilty to conspiring to disclose the contents of the tape.
Johnson, 34, of Charlottesville, was fined by U.S. District Judge John MacKenzie the maximum $5,000 for the offense, an infraction.
According to the statement of facts in the plea agreement, Johnson "participated in a series of meetings in which the parties discussed using and leaking the Wilder recording, which they sometimes referred to as `Beach Music.' "
