RADFORD COUNCIL WILL CONSIDER BILLBOARD ISSUE

Radford may or may not have more billboards soon.

City building official Bob Long said the city has issued 10 sign permits in the last three months, about 50 percent more than usual. These permits are for signs in the 120- to 280-square-foot range - billboard size.

In the meantime, the Planning Commission is zeroing in on recommendations to regulate billboard locations, but it can't work fast enough to prevent this small flood of advertising.

At a commission meeting Monday, members voted to recommend to City Council an immediate moratorium on new billboards until action on the revised zoning ordinance can be taken.

The commission is considering restricting new billboards to industrial areas and along Interstate 81. A moratorium will have no effect on existing billboards.

City Council will consider the billboard issue at its regular meeting Monday at 7:30 p.m. in Council Chambers.

The council also will consider appropriating $156,825 of unspent 1990-91 school funds for immediate replacement of the Belle Heth Elementary School roof and purchase of computers for elementary schools.
