FLOYD COUNTY ROLLS PAST FORT CHISWELL
Fred Via scored 25 points as Floyd County broke on top early and coasted to a 74-62 boys' basketball victory over Fort Chiswell on Friday night in a matchup of Mountain Empire District contenders.Floyd County (11-1 overall, 9-1 Mountain Empire) led 40-21 at the half and pushed the margin to 24 late in the game. Fort Chiswell is 10-2, 8-2.
Travis Crawford added 16 points and Mike Hylton 14 for the Buffaloes.
Brian Lamkins had 22 points for Fort Chiswell. \
Galax 67
Narrows 50
NARROWS - Jason Ross and Jeff Spells scored 22 each and Galax (7-5, 7-3) made its free throws down the stretch to bury Narrows.
The Maroon Tide made 13 of 15 fourth-quarter free throws and outscored the Green Wave 23-10 in the quarter.
McCreery Mann had five 3-pointers and 17 points, and Chad Fleeman added 14 points for Narrows (4-5, 4-5), which was outscored 15-2 at the free-throw line. \
Rocky Gap 63
Giles 61
ROCKY GAP - Giles blew a chance to erase a three-point deficit in one trip to the free-throw line and Rocky Gap escaped with a Mountain Empire District victory.
Rocky Gap (5-6, 4-6) led 63-60 when Giles' Rusty Stafford was fouled while shooting a 3-pointer with seven seconds left. Stafford, however, missed two of the free throws, and the Eagles rebounded and ran out the clock.
With about 1:20 left, Giles (1-9, 1-9) took its first lead of the game, 60-59, on Stafford's basket. With 26 seconds left, Joe Cromer scored on a layup to give Rocky Gap a 61-60 lead.
The Eagles pressed and stole the ball. Kyle Gibson was fouled and made both free throws for a 63-60 lead, leading to Stafford's chance at the free-throw line.
Stafford finished with 21 points for Giles. Rusty Newby had 13 and Kevin Dooley 11. Brian Lawson had 18, Clay Saunders 12 and Cromer 12 for Rocky Gap.

SHAWSVILLE - Grayson (10-3, 9-1) jumped to a 21-7 lead and coasted past the Shawnees (1-9, 0-9) in a Mountain Empire District game.
Mitch Hawks pumped in 20 points for the Blue Devils, with Bonner Satterwhite added 13. Kenny Dow had 16 for Shawsville. \

ALTAVISTA - Sherman Pannell scored 29 points and Mark Johnson had a triple-double for the unbeaten Colonels in their Seminole District romp over the Minutemen.
Johnson, a 6-foot-2 guard, had 23 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for Altavista (12-0, 12-0). Eddie McMillan added 19 and Mike Kinlaw 11.
Chris Dean had 22 for Liberty (4-9, 4-9), including four 3-pointers. Patrick Patterson had 17 and Matt Hogan and Scott Martin 10 each. \

APPOMATTOX - Mike Moon scored 12 and Troy Smith and Mike Williams added 11 points each as the Golden Eagles picked up a Seminole District victory over the winless Raiders.
Staunton River (6-5, 6-5) trailed by one after a quarter but took control by outscoring Appomattox 11-2 in the second.
Brad Bryant scored 12 for the Raiders (0-12, 0-12). \

HILLSVILLE - The Cavaliers survived a bomb threat to dump the Bobcats in a New River District meeting.
Radford (2-10, 0-2) threw in a dozen 3-pointers, but Carroll County outdistanced the Bobcats in the second half.
Jason Stockner led all scorers with 20 points for the Cavs (10-5, 1-1). Ben Sumner added 14, Kris Richardson 12 and Jason Gallimore 12.
Chris Hairston led the Bobcats with 18 points. Kris Smith and Wayne Lineburg had 11 each. \

BLACKSBURG - Steve Mannon scored 11 points as Gateway Christian trampled Temple Christian.
Gateway led 43-7 at halftime, and the Crusaders (10-4) had 12 players score during the game. Temple Christian was led by Matt Nickles with seven points.

NEW CASTLE - David McPherson scored 18 points and Mark Crawford added 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Rockets past the Rebels in a Pioneer District tussle. Craig County is 2-10, 2-8; Rockbridge is 3-10, 2-9. \
