DON'T BUILD BIG SNOWMAN ON FORECAST
If it snows this afternoon, Jan Jackson will have predicted right. If it snows a lot, Jackson's children will get their wish and be sledding.
But they shouldn't count on it and neither should you, Jackson said Friday night from his National Weather Service office.
A storm moving Roanoke's way from the Midwest could bring the valley about an inch of snow today and dust the New River Valley with maybe 2 inches.
"It'll be real light, except for far Southwest Virginia and down around the Kentucky border," Jackson said. That edge of the mountain area could get 4 to 5 inches, he said.
The forecast for today was for a high temperature around 30 and a low tonight about 20. Temperatures could move to near 40 on Sunday, the weather service said.
Mountain Lake Resort Hotel in Giles County, which is a good place to go cross-country skiing when it does really snow, had about an inch of snow on the ground Friday night, said Amy Reynolds. At Peaks of Otter Lodge in Bedford County, there was no snow on the ground in late evening.
"The lake's frozen, though," said worker Leslie King.
Wind chill was a big factor Friday night, dipping to minus 1 at 5 p.m. in Roanoke. The temperature was 28, with winds up to 33 mph.
