KEYDETS TURN BACK UNC-ASHEVILLE IN 2ND HALF

Although VMI had more turnovers than field goals made in the first half, the Keydets defeated UNC-Asheville 62-51 in men's college basketball Wednesday night.

The Keydets (7-9) had nine turnovers and made seven field goals, and UNC-Asheville (4-13) had 10 turnovers and made nine field goals.

VMI shot 26.9 percent from the field and UNC-Asheville was 32.1.

In the second half, the game stayed very close. VMI took the lead for good at 12:37 on a layup by Jonathan Goodman that gave VMI a 34-32 lead. That started a 9-0 run for the Keydets and put them ahead 41-32 with 10:09 remaining in the game.

UNC-Asheville trailed by five 52-47 with 2:25 to go in the game, but VMI scored five straight points all free throws to put them up by 10 with a minute to play.

Jonathan Penn from Pulaski County had 20 points for VMI, but the key was Lewis Preston.

Preston, who played high school basketball at Franklin County High, was out Monday night with an abscessed tooth. He came back and scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.

"They made us play awful tonight," said VMI coach Joe Cantafio. "They ran us out of our offense, but credit that to their defensive play.

"I was not surprised that we had more turnovers than field goals in the first half. We had a six point lead near the end of the half, and turned it over three times.

"I still don't know what we did. Lewis was the big difference for us. We really need him."
