MARINE OFFICER TO TALK ON BLACKS IN MILITARY
One year after Operation Desert Storm, which spurred debate about the percentage of black Americans in the military, there still is controversy about the issue and about promotional opportunities for blacks in the armed services.Colonel Fred L. Jones, director of program support for research, development and acquisition command for the United States Marine Corps, will discuss these issues Tuesday at 7 p.m. in an open seminar at the Donaldson Brown Center.
Jones' discussion, "An Historical and Personal Perspective of Black Americans in the Department of Defense," is a Black History Month event that is jointly sponsored by the Black History Month Committee and the Marine Corps.
Jones has been in the military for nearly 30 years. He began as a base disposal officer in Quantico. He earned his bachelor's degree from Oregon State University and recently completed work on a master's of public administration degree from the University of Oklahoma.
Jones agreed to take the place of General George Wall Jr., who was unable to attend. A reception will follow the seminar.
