THE TECH-UVA GAME IS JUST ONE OF THE BATTLES WAFTING YOUR WAY

LIVE: The big basketball game this week is Virginia Tech-UVa at the Roanoke Civic Center on Wednesday at 7 p.m. It can be heard over WVVV, WKEX, WJJJ, WRAD and WRIQ, which also will carry today's Virginia Tech at South Florida game at 6:30 p.m.

In high school sports, WRAD, WRIQ and WKEX will have Friday's Radford-Blacksburg game at 7:30 p.m. WRAD and WRIQ will have Radford-Alleghany on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

WVVV will have a remote today from Townside Inc. Realtors in Blacksburg, 2-5 p.m.

\ WHAT'S NEW? WVRU will air a new 12-part series called "Thinking About Drinking" Thursday at 9:30 p.m. The half-hour documentaries will explore America's No. 1 substance-abuse problem. The first segment is titled, "The Magic Potion."

Listen for details on a huge Van Halen ticket contest on WVVV. The station will have major giveaways for the group's Feb. 26 show in Roanoke.

WRIQ has limited the talk and now has more continuous country music.

WFNR has reinstated its "Bluegrass Roundup" newsletter; the February issue is now on the stands.

\ INTERNATIONAL: WVRU's "International Folk Music Hour," today 2-3 p.m., features the music of Greece.

"Lakutshon Ilanga: Music Is a Healer" airs on WVRU Tuesday at 8 p.m. The 13 segments in this series features South African music and uses local people as guides to the various aspects of African music. The fourth part is titled "South Africa Sings."

WUVT airs "New Music" weekdays noon-9 p.m., and an "International Fest" today, 5-9 p.m., with reggae, ska, blues, dance and more.

\ NEWS PROGRAMS: Austrian native Herta Freitag, a retired mathematics professor from Hollins College, will discuss her escape from Nazi oppression and her subsequent arrival in the United States on WVRU's "Talk of the Town," broadcast Wednesday at 8 p.m. and Friday at 1 p.m.

"Speakers Corner" airs on WVRU Monday at 1 p.m. with anchorman Roger Mudd, who this week interviews Stephen Carter, a Yale law professor, who will discuss his ideas on race relations, policy making and political action, excerpted from his book "Reflections of An Affirmative Action Baby."

WJJJ has Paul Harvey twice today, 8:30 a.m. and 12:10 p.m., with quips on events and people and news and comment.

\ ROCK: WVRU's "Long Live Rock," Monday at 9 p.m., has Part 2 of a three-part series on the Doobie Brothers. This segment covers 1975-80.

On WVVV this week: "The King Biscuit Flower Hour," Sunday at 10 p.m., has Ozzy Osborne; "Metal Shop" airs Wednesday at 11 p.m.; John Cougar Mellencamp's "Scarecrow" is this week's "Album Feature" Sunday at 11 p.m.; "In the Studio," Sunday at 9 p.m., has The Cars; and Friday's "Five at Five" has the Rolling Stones.

\ COUNTRY: WKEX has the "National Record Review" today, 1-5 p.m. and begins broadcasting country oldies 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

WFNR has "Grand Old Country" today, 8-10 p.m., with golden country oldies.

WPSK airs "Star Trax" Sunday at 10 p.m. and "American Country Countdown," with the Top 40 of the week, Sunday at 4 p.m.

WRAD airs "The Ralph Emery Show" weekdays at 10:30 a.m.

WRIQ has the "Top 30 Country Countdown" with Jim Casey on Sunday, 1-4 p.m.

\ GOSPEL/CHRISTIAN: WBLB has the call-in show "On The Air" with Brother Hawthorne Reed Jr. today, 3-4 p.m.

WKEX simulcasts "Focus on the Family," weekdays at 9:05 a.m. and 6:05 p.m. This week's programming is: "Teen Devotion" Monday and Tuesday; "Single Parenting" Wednesday and Thursday; and "Living Above Your Circumstances" on Friday.

\ CHILDREN: WBLB's "Kid's Corner," Mondays at 4:30 p.m., has child DJs, tunes and talk, plus Bible stories and discussions.

WUVT's "Hickory Dickory Dock" airs Saturday mornings, 9-11, with call-ins, children's poems, songs and discussions.

\ JAZZ: WUVT has it Sunday through Friday, 9 a.m.-noon.

WKEX has "Wax Works," 1-2 p.m. weekdays, with big band, jazz, swing and ballad greats.

WVRU's "Mellow Tones," with fusion, mainstream and new age jazz, airs Sunday, 9 a.m.-noon.

WVVV's "True Blues" airs Sunday at 8 p.m. with music from the legends and the newcomers.

\ COMEDY: WVVV's "Comedy Hour" runs today, 10-11 a.m.
