STATE'S OLDEST GUARD UNIT TO BE ENDED

Virginia's oldest National Guard unit will be eliminated in October unless the Army changes its mind before then.

The 276th Combat Engineering Battalion includes 138 members in Richlands, 74 in Vansant and 64 in Tazewell armories.

In the past year, it carried out an estimated $4 million worth of earth-moving work in Russell and Tazewell counties and at Southwest Virginia Community College near Richlands.
