NEW RIVER PEOPLE

JAMES R. NICHOLS, former dean of Virginia Tech's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, received the Virginia Agribusiness Council's Distinguished Friend of Agriculture Award at the organization's 21st annual appreciation banquet in Richmond.

Nichols was cited for 27 years of service to the state's industry and to the university.

Under his leadership as dean, the college's program, enrollment and respect by peer institutions increased significantly.

\ THOMAS C. BROWN JR., a native of Blacksburg, was elected president of the Virginia Bar Association at the annual meeting held in Williamsburg.

A Virginia School of Law graduate, Brown is with the McGuire Woods Battle & Boothe firm in Northern Virginia.

\ A.L. "IKE" ELLER JR., an extension livestock specialist at Virginia Tech, received the Extension Service Award from the Virginia Agribusiness Council at its annual appreciation banquet in Richmond.

\ JANAKA CASPER of Christiansburg, executive director of Virginia Mountain Housing, was named an Affordable Housing Advisory Council member for the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta.

Recently named to the 1992 Virginia Golden Olympics steering committee were: BILL WINFREY of the Blacksburg Parks and Recreation Department and RUTH HEINZELMANN of Shawsville, who will serve as co-chairmen; JACK LILLY of Virginia Tech, who will serve as the 1992 representative; and KEMVIA ADAMS of the Montgomery County Parks and Recreation Department, secretary and hospitality chairwoman.

\ JIM WHELAN, owner of Healthfit Inc., and NORMA CARROLL, assistant vice president of Central Fidelity Bank, have been named residential co-chairmen of the Montgomery Unit of the American Heart Association's education and residential fund-raising campaign.

Whelan will be chairman for the Blacksburg area and Carroll will be chairman for the Christiansburg area.

Officers elected to the Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad are: 1st Lt. JOSEPH C. ALBERT JR.; 2nd Lts. DENNIS COTELLESE, BYRON DICKERSON, ROBERT EVANS and M. WAYNE MYERS JR.; secretary DIANE FENTON; and treasurer BENJAMIN SIMMERS.

\ DANIEL L. JENSEN, a Christiansburg native, recently was named to the tax staff at Deloitte & Touche in Nashville, Tenn.

\ EDDIE CARTER of Pulaski recently retired from the maintenance department at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant after 29 years.

Carter is a member of Pulaski Masonic Lodge No. 154.

\ FRANK T. SMITH of Shawsville recently retired as a cycle operator from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant after 22 years.

Smith is a member of the Riverview Holiness Church in Christiansburg.
