INDUSTRIES STILL LOOKING AT VALLEY AS POSSIBLE SITE
The economy may be down, but the New River Valley Economic Development Alliance still logged 69 visits and information requests from industrial prospects during 1991.During December, Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon, brought the Upjohn Co. to the region for a visit and the Alliance was host for two other prospects.
Regional information and site data was prepared for three more prospects, said Franklyn H. Moreno, Alliance marketing director, in his report on staff activity. That could generate requests for site visits this year.
The staff has started processing industry lists for direct-mail letters for a number of potential sites including the AT&T facility, closed two years ago.
Pulaski County Administrator Joseph N. Morgan told officials at a quarterly joint meeting of Pulaski County governing bodies Thursday night that the AT&T property still is being marketed worldwide by the state, the Alliance and its real estate broker. It has drawn some industrial visitors but no real prospects, he said.
The problem is the size of the site and its $14 million price tag, he said. Few industries need a site that large or that expensive.
