BRISTOL PICKS INTERIM SHERIFF FROM WITHIN
Maj. Eddie Barnes of the Bristol Sheriff's Department has been named interim sheriff to serve until the Nov. 3 election, succeeding the late Marshall Honaker.Honaker committed suicide Jan. 22 while being investigated for embezzling federal funds sent to Bristol for the housing of government prisoners. He had taken a leave of absence when the investigation became public Jan. 10.
Chief Deputy Charles Arnold had been handling the sheriff's duties since Honaker went on leave, but told the two circuit judges making the appointment that he did not want the interim job. He will remain in the department as chief deputy. - Southwest bureau
