GALAX ENDS FLOYD COUNTY'S STREAK
Forward Jeff Spells scored 32 points and grabbed 21 rebounds Friday night as Galax snapped Floyd County's 12-game winning streak 80-69, creating a tie for first place in the Mountain Empire District.It was the eighth victory in the past nine boys' basketball games for Galax, which raced to a 21-9 first-quarter lead but saw its lead dwindle to one point in the third and fourth quarters.
After Floyd had cut the deficit to one with 3:30 remaining, Jason Ross made a 3-pointer to give the Maroon Tide a four-point lead, then Spells, a 6-foot-2 junior, hit seven of eight free throws.
Ross and Stanley Meador each had 14 points for Galax, a four-point loser when the teams met in Floyd. The Scarlet Hurricane raised their record to 9-5 overall and 9-3 in the district.
Floyd, ranked seventh in Group A, fell to 12-2 and 10-2 and dropped into a tie with Grayson County, a 67-39 winner over Rocky Gap. Freddie Via led the Buffaloes with 20 points and Travis Crawford added 15. \

SHAWSVILLE - The Eagles' long-distance shooting was the difference in this Mountain Empire District game, primarily because of Todd Collins.
Collins made six 3-point baskets and finished with 20 points, while Brian Sale's 23 led Auburn (7-5, 6-4). The Eagles were 8-of-11 from beyond the arc.
Kenny Dow, as usual, led the Shawnees (1-12, 0-12) with 28 points and 16 rebounds. \
Narrows 63

NARROWS - Chad Fleeman made a leaning 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift Narrows to victory in a Mountain Empire District thriller.
The Green Wave (6-5, 6-5) trailed 61-57 with 10 seconds remaining. Brian Evans then hit a 3-pointer to pull Narrows to 61-60 with three seconds left.
After a backcourt violation by Giles with two seconds remaining, Narrows inbounded to Fleeman, who made the winner while falling down at the top of the key.
Anthony Wiley led Narrows with 19 points and Fleeman added 10.
Kevin Dooley had 16, Rusty Stafford 14 and Steven Hairston 10 for the Spartans (1-11, 1-11). \

BEDFORD - Scott Martin scored nine of his 12 points in the fourth quarter as Liberty came from behind to beat the Golden Eagles.
The Minutemen (6-9, 6-9) led 14-4 in the first quarter, but Staunton River (7-6, 7-6) rallied to take a six-point lead into the fourth quarter. Liberty then went on a 17-10 run to win it.
Chris Dean led Liberty with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Jerry Padgett added 11 points.
Eric Flood paced Staunton River with 19 points, 15 in the first half. Troy Smith added 10. \

APPOMATTOX - Bryan Jennings threw in 19 points and Jefferson Forestkept the Raiders winless with a Seminole District rout.
The Cavaliers (9-5, 9-5) jumped to a 21-5 lead and had no trouble with Appomattox (0-15, 0-15), which was led by Tryone Hancock's 11 points. \

WYTHEVILLE - Kevin Lucas scored 20 points and led four players in double figures as the Crusaders smashed Granite.
Matt Linkous added 16 points, Sam Moore 14 and Tom Brookman 12 for Gateway (11-5).
Jason Edmonds led Granite with 30 points. \

HOPKINSVILLE - Oak Hill, ranked eighth in the country by USA Today, raised its record to 25-2 behind 26 points by Chris Davis. Hopkinsville fell to 11-7.
