MONTGOMERY OFFICIAL GETS DAY-CARE POST

Mary Ellen Verdu, director of the Montgomery County Department of Social Services, has been appointed by Gov. Douglas Wilder as director of the state's Council on Child Day Care and Early Childhood Programs.

Verdu, who has run the Montgomery County office since 1988, will begin her new duties March 16, Wilder's office said Friday.

Verdu will have responsibility for coordinating child care and early childhood programs, with emphasis on "at-risk" children and on promoting employer-sponsored child care.

She will be responsible for administering about $15 million annually in Child Care Block Grant funds.

A member of the council since 1989, Verdu has a bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a master's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.
