DRIVER INDICTED IN DEATH 1
A Roanoke man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with an automobile accident that killed a passenger in his car last September.Roger Lee Israel, 21, was named in an indictment returned Monday by a grand jury in Roanoke Circuit Court.
He is accused of acting with gross recklessness in an accident that killed David Lee Hopkins, 20, of Roanoke.
Hopkins died from head injuries the afternoon of Sept. 28, when the car he was riding in struck a utility pole on Orange Avenue Northwest.
Police said at the time that Israel was driving west on Orange Avenue, approaching the 1900 block, when he failed to make a left turn where the main road becomes Salem Turnpike.
The car went off the right side of the road and hit a utility pole.
Crash damage indicated that the car had been exceeding the 30 mph speed limit, authorities said.
Hopkins was pronounced dead at the scene.
Israel suffered facial injuries and was treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
