INMATE HELD IN CITY KILLING
A 22-year-old inmate in a Pennsylvania jail was indicted Monday on charges of killing a Roanoke man in November.A grand jury meeting Monday in Roanoke Circuit Court charged Thomas Herman Jones Jr. with murder, use of a firearm and possession of a firearm as a felon.
Jones is accused of killing Clifford Daniel Long, who was shot down in an outdoor hallway at Ferncliff Apartments on Nov. 20.
Long's death was the only Roanoke slaying that was left unsolved in 1991.
With the indictment Monday, Roanoke police have brought charges in each of the 14 killings last year. Six people have been convicted, one case was dismissed and the rest are awaiting trial.
Long, a 40-year-old hotel employee, was shot once in the chest as he argued with a man in the hallway, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said Monday that the argument apparently was over a prior drug transaction, but they declined to elaborate on details of the killing.
A suspect was spotted running from the area, but police made no arrests at the time.
Since the shooting, Jones has been charged by federal authorities in Pennsylvania with possession of a firearm at the time of a drug raid, authorities said.
He will face extradition proceedings in an effort to bring him back to Roanoke.
