EARLY WINDUP CONSIDERED IN SHERIFF PROBE
The government attorney overseeing an investigation into alleged embezzlement by Bristol Sheriff Marshall Honaker said Monday she will consider a request by city officials to quickly conclude the probe.Honaker allegedly diverted $377,700 of public money into a personal banking account. The money allegedly came from lucrative contracts to house federal and Washington, D.C., prisoners at the Bristol jail.
Honaker was never charged with a crime. A grand jury began hearing evidence in the investigation Jan. 21, but the proceedings were put on hold after Honaker committed suicide on Jan. 22.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie Campbell of Abingdon said she met Monday with Bristol City Manager Paul Spangler and City Attorney Walter Bressler. They urged the government to wrap up the probe to remove a cloud of rumor and uncertainty surrounding the matter.
