Company to design Roanoke waterlineDewberry & Davis, a Fairfax company operating a Roanoke office, will design a 15-mile extension for Roanoke's municipal water system, a $14-million project that will double the city's capacity to 28 million gallons a day. The company said it will design a line from the treatment plant at Carvin's Cove to the Crystal Spring pump station in South Roanoke.
It also will evaluate the city's core water system, analyzing more than 1,500 pipes, and will design two water storage tanks of 1 million gallons each. - Staff report
Cement plant, union cancel 2nd meeting
The union representing hourly workers at Roanoke Cement Co. in Botetourt County reported little progress in contract negotiations Monday and a second meeting set for today has been canceled.
Local D-314 of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers "more than likely" will take the company's offer back to the membership for another vote next week, said union president Jeffrey Stump. The offer was rejected by the union by a ratio of 35 to 1 about two weeks ago. The union represents 158 hourly employees at the plant.
Stump said the union's main objection was the company's proposal to increase insurance deductibles and require retired employees to pay for their insurance. The British-owned cement company said last month that it offered a pay raise of $2 an hour. - Staff report
Tultex completes sports-logos deal
Tultex Corp. of Martinsville said it has completed acquisition of Logo 7 Inc., an Indianapolis screen printer of sports apparel. The manufacturer of fleecewear said it paid $45 million in cash and $15 million in a new preferred stock series that will have an annual dividend of 7.5 percent and will be convertible into common stock.
Tultex, a large sweat-suit maker, expects to use Logo 7's sports logos on its garments. Logo 7, projecting sales of more than $85 million for 1991 , is a licensee of the National Football League, major league baseball, National Hockey League and other sports organizations. - Staff report
