WHO, WHEN & WHERE

`Going Baroque!'

Soprano Mary Burt, winner of the 1987 Metropolitan Opera national auditions, and five other guest artists will perform 17th- and 18th-century classical music Saturday in a benefit concert for the Virginia Chamber Music Academy.

Titled "Going Baroque!" the program will be at 8 p.m. in the Salon Recital Hall of Virginia Tech's Squires Center.

Joining Burt on the program of music by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi and Vierdanck will be trumpeters Barbara Butler and Charles Geyer of the Eastman School of Music faculty; mezzo-soprano Emily Lodine, a specialist in music of the Baroque; flutist Barli Nugent of the Aspen Wind Quintet; and harpsichordist Lionel Party, a member of the faculty at the Juilliard School of Music.

Ballet auditions

Southwest Virginia Ballet will hold open auditions for junior and senior company members and apprentice positions Feb. 16 at the Post School of Ballet.

Auditions for junior company positions (ages 11-13) will begin at 1 p.m. Senior company (14 and older) tryouts will start at 3 p.m.

Females must bring pointe shoes, and dancers auditioning for senior company positions should be prepared to perform a one- to two-minute piece of their choice.
