SALEM WITHSTANDS WILLIAM BYRD RALLY
Josh Pugh scored 21 points and Salem led from start to finish Tuesday night in a 65-58 Blue Ridge District boys' basketball victory over William Byrd.The Spartans (6-7, 1-3) led 31-27 at halftime and built an 11-point advantage early in the fourth quarter. But the Terriers (8-7, 1-3) rallied and closed the gap to 52-51 with less than two minutes to play.
Salem then spread the floor and converted layups and free throws down the stretch to preserve the win. Mark Byington added 19 points and Corey Epperly 13 for the Spartans.
David Robertson had a game-high 23 points for William Byrd. \

LYNCHBURG - Kerry Whitt hit a pair of free throws with eight seconds left to give Cave Spring its only lead of the game and a non-district victory.
Shawn West, who led the Hilltoppers (7-11) with 18 points, missed two short shots in the final seconds as the Knights (9-7) hung on.
Whitt scored 18 points and Chris Webster chipped in with 13 for Cave Spring, which rallied after trailing 46-21 with 1:40 left in the third quarter. \

William Fleming 83
SOUTH BOSTON - Jermaine Waller led six Halifax County players in double figures as the Comets blitzed William Fleming in a non-district game.
Fleming fell despite 31 points by Carlos Rhodes, who had five 3-pointers.
The Colonels cut Halifax County's lead to seven with about three minutes left in the game. But free throws kept the Comets out of danger.
David Williams had 19 points for William Fleming. \

Patrick Henry rallied in the fourth quarter to pull out a non-district victory.
The Patriots trailed 31-29 when Erika Smith converted a three-point play with 1:11 left to give PH (7-6) a 32-31 lead. Heritage (6-11) missed a shot, and PH's Ashaki Johnson was fouled at the other end. She hit both shots with 20 seconds to go for a 34-31 Patriot lead.
Smith led PH with 10 points. \

Marqueetta Randolph scored 30 points and William Fleming clubbed the Comets in a non-district matchup.
Tonya Kabia added 10 points for the Colonels (10-5), who outscored Halifax by 20 points in both the first and third quarters. \

Roanoke Valley Christian outscored Carlisle 28-2 in the third quarter to put the Blue Ridge Conference game far out of reach.
Danae Wegner scored 23 points and Brandi Surkamer 15 for the Eagles (12-5, 9-0). \

North Cross 24
The Celtics held North Cross to two points in the first quarter and nine for the half in a Blue Ridge Conference victory.
The Celtics (12-2 overall, 8-2 district) were led by Shannon Simpson with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Abby Dickson grabbed 11 rebounds.
Kelly Baetz had 13 points for North Cross. \
