CHEROKEES TOPPLE REBELS

Jim Latos had three goals Wednesday night to lead the Knoxville Cherokees to a 7-5 victory over the Roanoke Valley Rebels in East Coast Hockey League action.

The loss left the Rebels (16-26-3) tied with Knoxville (15-27-5) for sixth place in the battle for the final Eastern Division playoff spot.

Knoxville had lost six straight games and eight of its past 10, but the Cherokees were inspired Wednesday night. They scored three goals in the first seven minutes to put the Rebels on the defensive from the outset.

Trevor Smith had a pair of goals for the Rebels, Peter Kasowski assisted on all five Roanoke Valley goals, and Mark Woolf had a goal and four assists. Still, the Rebels lost their fifth straight road game and 15th of their past 16 away from home. They are 4-18-2 on enemy ice this season.

\ ICE CHIPS: The Rebels return to the ice on Friday at 7:30 p.m., when they open a two-game homestand with Johnstown. The clubs meet again on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the LancerLot. \
