Medical waste burning: The House Conservation and Natural Resources Committee sent to the House floor two bills to impose a two-year moratorium on medical waste incinerator construction.\ \ School uniforms: The House of Delegates voted 94-4 to pass a bill allowing the Petersburg School Board to adopt a mandatory uniform policy for elementary school and middle school students.\ \ Grand juries: The House killed a bill to eliminate a requirement that felony cases be heard by grand juries.\ \ Swans: The House Conservation and Natural Resources carried over until 1993 a bill to ban hunting of tundra swans.\ \ Records: The Senate General Laws Committee unanimously endorsed a bill to clarify the public's right to obtain government records stored in computer databases.\ \ Guns: The Senate Courts of Justice Committee voted 10-4 to endorse a bill that would add several localities to the list of jurisdictions where it is illegal to carry loaded semiautomatic weapons in public. The law currently covers Richmond, Norfolk and Virginia Beach.\ \ Felony sentencings: The Senate Courts Committee unanimously endorsed a bill that would require separate sentencing hearings in felony jury trials so a jury could hear a defendant's background before passing sentence.\ \ Abortion: The House gave preliminary approval, 62-35, to a bill that would require parental notification when an unmarried minor seeks an abortion.

Betting: The House General Laws Committee voted 10-9 to endorse a bill that would allow local referendums on satellite wagering on horse races.
