SHERIFF MAY HAVE TAKEN MORE THAN $377,700
More money may have been taken from the city than the $377,700 in federal funds the federal government alleges was embezzled by the late Sheriff Marshall Honaker, the city attorney said.According to an affidavit filed by IRS Special Agent Jack Bumgardner, "there appears to be probable cause to believe that other monies were diverted into a personal account, but I have no idea how much money we're talking about at this point," City Attorney Walt Bressler said.
Bressler said he hopes a special state audit of the city, which is under way, either will confirm or dismiss his suspicions, and help the city recover any losses.
Honaker committed suicide Jan. 22 just as a federal grand jury was to begin hearing a second day of testimony in the case. He had not been charged with a crime. - Associated Press
