GUN SELLER AVOIDS PRISON
A 22-year-old Roanoke man will not serve any time in prison for buying a semiautomatic pistol for a 15-year-old boy who police say used the weapon in a shootout.Carlos Eugene Smith was placed on three years' probation Thursday by U.S. District Judge James Turk, who said he was convinced that Smith had no idea the gun would be used in a gunbattle.
The Sept. 6 shootout on Portland Avenue Northwest left one teen-ager dead, with 18 bullet wounds, and one wounded.
