CLEANUP SET SATURDAY AT CARVINS COVE

Britt Rossie has long been aware of litter along the banks of the Carvins Cove Reservoir. In fact, says Rossie, some wildflower walks sponsored by the Science Museum of Western Virginia have been moved from the reservoir grounds because the filth so detracted from the tour.

But even Rossie was disgusted when he visited the reservoir a couple of months ago, during the 2 1/2-month-long drought. The water level dropped by 13 feet, and on the dry lake bed was more garbage.

Rossie, the director of the Hopkins Planetarium, decided then to organize a cleanup.

On Saturday, volunteers will converge on the reservoir to pick up trash.

Sponsored by the Science Museum and the Cabell Brand Center, the cleanup will run from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers can meet at the boat landing at the end of Reservoir Road.

Roanoke has donated plastic bags and will pick up the filled bags next week.

To help, just visit Carvins Cove between 9 a.m. and noon Saturday. Gloves, warm clothing and boots are advised, though wading in the water is prohibited.

Coffee and doughnuts will be provided.

For information, call the Science Museum at 342-5710.
