MARTINSVILLE FAST BREAK FOILS MAGNA VISTA 70-47

Martinsville used its fast break to quickly bury Magna Vista in a 70-47 Piedmont District boys' basketball rout of the Warriors on Friday night.

The Bulldogs (14-2 overall, 12-2 Piedmont) started the game with a 17-8 run and put the game out of reach by halftime. Maurice Spencer scored seven of his 15 points in the first quarter for Martinsville.

Chris Frith and Michael Frasier scored six apiece in the second quarter to help put the Bulldogs on top by 20 at intermission.

Lamont Martin totaled 15 points, Frasier 12 and Demetrius Martin 10 for Martinsville.

Marcus Toney had 18 points for Magna Vista (11-5, 9-5), which never got closer than 17 points in the second half. \

Laurel Park 65

Bassett 50

MARTINSVILLE - Laurel Park built a 22-point lead after three quarters and cruised to its 14th Piedmont District victory without a loss.

Senior Odell Hodge led the way with 21 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocked shots for the Lancers (25-2, 14-0). Ronnie Jackson scored 15 points and Lonzy Robertson added 14.

Dytanyon Norman led all scorers with 24 points for Bassett (8-8, 7-7). The Bengals, trying to slow the pace, scored three points in the second quarter to fall behind 30-14 at halftime. \

Patrick County 56

Gretna 49

STUART - Jonathan Vaughn made four consecutive free throws in the final 1:05 as the Cougars (3-13, 3-11) survived a late comeback by the Hawks (6-11, 4-10) in a Piedmont District game.

Patrick County, which has won three of its past five games, led 48-43 when Gretna's Lamont Hubbard was fouled. A technical was called on the play and gave the Hawks four free throws - Hubbard (15 points) made both of his and Eric Waller (17) made the two technical shots to cut Gretna's deficit to 48-47.

Patrick County outscored Gretna 8-2 in the last 1:05, with Vaughn making his free throws and Chad Reynolds scoring on a baseline move and two free throws for four of his 11 points.

Mike Burnette led Patrick with 14 points and Chad Joyce had 12. \

Tunstall 76

Dan River 60

RINGGOLD - The Wildcats fell behind 16-3 and could not catch Tunstall in a Piedmont District game.

The Trojans (8-8, 8-6) got 21 points from Tarrace Carter, 14 from Khris Law and 12 from Ricky Austin.

Roderick Davis had 16, Sonny Motley 13 and Chris Wilson 10 for Dan River (5-12, 4-10). \

Fieldale-Collinsville 71

Chatham 66

COLLINSVILLE - Fieldale-Collinsville had a struggle with the last-place team in the Piedmont District but improved its record to 10-6, 8-6 in the district.

Each team had four players in double figures, topped by Scott Chitwood of Fieldale-Collinsville with 15. Chris Turner and Tim White shared scoring honors for visiting Chatham (1-15, 1-13) with 14. \

Rocky Gap 65

Galax 63

ROCKY GAP - A box-and-one defense throttled Galax star Jeff Spells and Kyle Gibson and Clay Saunders made baskets in the second overtime to give Rocky Gap the Mountain Empire District upset victory.

Spells, third in the district scoring race with a 21.9-point average, was held to 15 as three Eagles took turns guarding him in the box-and-one.

The game was close throughout, with Rocky Gap making up deficits in the fourth quarter and the first overtime. The Eagles came back from four points down in regulation, then Joe Cromer (23 points) nailed a 3-pointer with a half-minute left in the first overtime to force another extra period.

With Rocky Gap up 61-60 in the second OT, Spells scored to give Galax a one-point edge. However, Saunders scored inside to put Rocky Gap ahead for good and, after a walking call on Galax, Gibson made a short jumper to seal the victory.

Stanley Meadows led Galax (10-6, 10-4) with 17 points. Juan Garcia and Gibson each had 11 for Rocky Gap (7-8, 6-8).

Parry McCluer 49

COVINGTON - The Cougars went on a 20-4 run in the third quarter to put away the Fighting Blues in a Pioneer District mismatch.

The victory was Covington's 12th straight. The Cougars are 13-3, 13-1. Parry McCluer dropped to 7-9, 6-8.

The Cougars, who shot 57 percent (29-of-51) from the field, led 37-24 when they went on their run to boost the margin to 57-38. Parry McCluer never recovered.

Everett Hughes scored 14 points to lead a balanced Covington attack. Leslie Gray had 14 for the Blues. \

Lexington 78

Bath County 73

HOT SPRINGS - Lexington built a nine-point lead midway through the fourth quarter, then held off the Chargers in a Pioneer District game.

The Scarlet Hurricane (9-7, 7-7) jumped in front 57-55 on Cole Atkins' hoops to end the third quarter and never trailed again. Bath County (11-7, 10-6) cut Lexington's fourth-quarter bulge to 66-64 with 3:49 to play. After another Hurricane score, Bath never got closer than three points again.

Ethan Emma led Lexington with 19 points, and Gavin Clark added 17. Bath's top scorer was Todd Jenkins, with 18 points. \

Rockbridge 79

Highland 53

FAIRFIELD - William Sensabaugh scored 19 and made three of his four 3-pointers in the third quarter as the Rebels pulled away from the Rams in the Pioneer District matchup.

Steve Matteson added 17 and Andy Cline 14 for Rockbridge (4-13, 3-12). Micah Ginn paced Highland (3-13, 3-12) with 26 points. \

Lebanon 83

Rural Retreat 73

RURAL RETREAT - Lebanon remained unbeaten in the Hogoheegee District and the Indians remained winless.

Aaron Fuller scored 19 points, Scott Allen 15 and Ben Campbell 15 for the Pioneers (13-1, 10-0), who built a 22-point halftime lead and cruised.

Jason Childers had 21, Joseph Brookshire 18 and Steven Crigger 16 for Rural Retreat (1-15, 0-13). \

PH-Glade Spring 49

GLADE SPRING - The visiting Warriors pulled away in the second half for a Hogoheegee District victory.

The Warriors led only 32-26 at halftime, but rolled in the second half. Chris French led Chilhowie (6-8, 5-4) with a game-high 23 points. Gus Wild's 20 paced PH-Glade Spring (3-13, 3-11). \

WYTHEVILLE - Jeffrey Bourne scored 18 points and the Maroons took care of a 14-point halftime lead in a Hogoheegee District victory.

The Maroons (12-7, 10-3) also got 15 points from Chris Waddell and 13 from Sie Dickinson.

Castlewood (7-10, 5-7) was led by O.J. Williams, who scored a game-high 31.

MARION - Marion outscored the Generals 21-7 in the second quarter on its way to a Highlands District rout.

Eric Hungate scored 21 points and Eddie Boothe added 19 for the Scarlet Hurricane (15-2, 7-0), who remained perfect in district play.

Brian Cregger chipped in with 10 assists. \

Oak Hill 97

Bullitt Central 69

SHEPARDSVILLE, Ky. - Oak Hill, of Mouth of Wilson, Va., jumped to a 12-0 lead en route to the easy victory over Bullitt Central.

Oak Hill is 28-2; Bullitt Central is 14-3. \

Thursday's game

\ Covington Boys' 93, Rainelle Christian 89: Donnie Costigan scored 28 of his 35 points in the second half as Covington Boys' Home held off Rainelle Christian in Rainelle, W.Va.

Costigan, for one of the few times this year, yielded game honors to Rainelle's Ryan Fitzwater with 37 points. Covington Boys' Home (13-2) withstood a last-quarter press by Rainelle Christian (8-7) that wiped out a 16-point third-quarter lead. \
