TEEN DIES IN SCHOOL SHOOTING
One person was shot dead and another critically wounded after gunfire erupted Friday in a parking lot outside Booker T. Washington High School, police said.Police Sgt. Danny Williams of Norfolk's homicide division said the shootings occurred at 12:48 p.m. in the school's back parking lot, which borders on Virginia Beach Boulevard.
Chuck Martin, a spokeswoman for Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, said Darryl Taylor, 19, was shot in the chest and pronounced dead at the scene.
The second victim, Ronald Smith, 18, underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to the abdomen, Martin said. His condition was critical.
George Raiss, information director at the school, said the victims were not students at Booker T. Washington.
Students in gym class heard shots fired outside their building and called police, he said. Students and officials at the school were reacting to the shootings "with a great deal of anxiety and concern."
Although it was outside the school building and involved non-students, Raiss said "it's reflective of what is going on in our society right now."
No other injuries were reported and the school was not evacuated.
