VA. LAWYER FOUND DEAD IN HIS CAR

A financially troubled lawyer from Newport News, Va., killed himself one day after FBI agents raided his office to search for evidence of mail and wire fraud.

David M. Murray Sr., 60, who owned a home in Kill Devil Hills, was found dead in his car Friday, said Dare County spokeswoman Gwen White.

A Park Service ranger found Murray's body slumped on the front seat, White said. Murray had gunshot wounds in the abdomen and heart, and a .38-caliber handgun was found at his side, she said.

The FBI referred questions about Thursday's raid at Murray's Newport News office to Harvey Bryant, an assistant U.S. attorney who would say only that he specializes in white-collar fraud cases.

But according to a search warrant filed in U.S. District Court in Norfolk, the FBI was looking for documents relating to investments offering a unrealistically high rate of return. They also were seeking evidence of mail fraud and wire fraud, the warrant said.

Murray resigned last month as executor of the estate of Emma Moir Hauser, who died in July at age 90. A lawsuit filed by Hauser's family members accused Murray of converting Hauser's $1.5 million estate and a $700,000 trust to cash and investing the money under his own name in "risky and speculative ventures."

Attorneys for the woman filed a $2.3 million real estate lien against properties they believe Murray owned in James City County.

Murray also was a defendant in two other civil suits in Newport News, and the Internal Revenue Service in November filed a $641,516 tax lien on a property he owns in Virginia.
