MARTINSVILLE'S LEE PICKS VA. TECH
Cynthia Lee, who led Martinsville to the Region III girls' basketball title and a spot in the Group AA semifinals, has committed to Virginia Tech. The 6-foot-3 Lee is the second top Timesland player to choose Virginia Tech, joining Pulaski County guard Terri Garland who signed earlier with the Hokies. Lee will sign on the next national date in April.
Lee's decision, according to Carla Giles, came down to North Carolina-Greensboro and Tech as far as Division I schools were concerned. She earlier eliminated Virginia Commonwealth, Old Dominion University and George Washington from her list.
"I think she can help Virginia Tech," said Giles. "She picked up her play in the tournaments and was more aggressive on defense. After that, we heard from Virginia and Clemson, but she showed no interest."
Lee was fourth in Timesland with a 17.2 scoring average. She was tops in field goal percentage (60.7 percent) and fifth in rebounding (10.5).
