VAN WRECK INJURES TECH STUDENTS DURING WEEKEND TRIP BY CREW CLUB

A Virginia Tech van skidded on ice in Pennsylvania this weekend and overturned, injuring several of the 15 students inside, but none of them seriously.

A member of Tech's crew club sustained a broken nose and others had arm and shoulder injuries when the van slid on ice and snow, about 30 miles outside of Pittsburgh Friday.

The van rolled over a few times, according to Sharon Yeagle, director of recreational sports at Tech. The students, who were on their way to Pittsburgh for an open meet, were wearing their seat belts, she said.

"We were lucky."

The 15 students, four of them women, were transported to two hospitals, then flew back to Roanoke on Saturday.

Tom Goodale, vice president for student affairs, put the plane tickets on his credit card. He will be reimbursed by the university's emergency fund.

Yeagle, who met the students when their plane landed, said they were shaken by the accident.

"We thought about getting a van to bring them back," she said. "But they didn't want anything to do with it."

Yeagle, Goodale, and others at the university took the students to Tech's infirmary where they were checked again. The university will do follow-up checks as well, Yeagle said.

The damaged van is still in Pennsylvania.

The crew club is the newest member of Tech's extramural sports club federation.
