WEDDLE TO ANNOUNCE GOP CANDIDACY

Radford businessman and City Councilman Gary Weddle will announce Thursday that he wants the Republican nomination for the 9th District Congressional seat.

Weddle will become the third Republican seeking a chance to challenge Democratic Congressman Rick Boucher, a five-term incumbent.

Weddle will announce at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Radford Best Western.

Other announced candidates are Lew Sheckler, a Radford University professor, and George Bell of Blacksburg, chairman of the Montgomery Republican Party.

Weddle has called Boucher one of the most liberal members of Congress and out of step with the average citizen in the district.

Boucher has been in office long enough, Weddle said. "I'm a real believer in turnover."

Some key Republicans in the district are behind his campaign, Weddle said. "I'm excited about the team I've put together."

Earlier, Weddle had indicated he was waiting to see if former Republican Congressman William Wampler of Bristol was going to run before he made up his own mind, but he says now that the race is something he needs to do regardless of Wampler's decision. Wampler has still not announced his intentions.

Weddle, 30, is originally from Blacksburg. He operates Garrett's, a clothing store in Radford, and was elected to city council in 1990.
