CITY NAMES REAL-ESTATE ASSESSOR
Willard N. Claytor, a former real estate appraiser for Roanoke who is now in private business, has been named real estate valuation director for the city.City Council appointed Claytor to the post Monday night after a 30-minute closed session. He will begin April 1 at starting salary of $56,000.
Claytor is the first black person to be named to fill one of the six positions that are filled by council. The posts include the city manager, finance director, city attorney, city clerk and municipal auditor. The city manager appoints and supervises all other departmental managers and municipal employees.
Claytor was chosen for the position from among 38 applicants, Vice Mayor Howard Musser said.
Claytor is also a former real estate assessor for Charlottesville. He is now a real estate broker.
The post has been vacant since Von Moody III resigned last April to take a job as vice president and real estate administrator for Dominion Trust Co. Moody held the job for nearly five years.
Council members said they took a long time to choose Moody's successor to be sure they chose the right person.
Nadine Minnix, deputy director under Moody, has been acting director since Moody left.
The real estate valuation director oversees a staff of 12 people who reassess 44,000 parcels of real estate each year.
